COMPETITION [HONORABLE MENTION] | MINHA CASA MINHA VIDA | SOCIAL HOUSING INFRASTRUCTURE

This competition entry for the infill redevelopment of social housing in Brasília’s suburban Sobradinho district introduces an integrated building–public space strategy for adding sustainable solutions to the design of low-income housing. The project site is surrounded by low-density suburb (loteamento) established from the 1970s onward, which have few current connections to urban resources.

In response, we propose a contemporary courtyard building and a field of public, educational, and recreational amenities that residents and neighbors may utilize. This system’s public space and landscape elements can be designed into neighboring areas in the future as resources permit, or adapted to denser settings in cities like São Paulo and Rio. By designing housing-landscape interactions on urban peripheries, this proposal expands the scope of conventional social housing to encompass elements that help cities become both socially and environmentally sustainable.
