GRADUATE STUDIO | IN - SITU REDEVELOPMENT | REBLOCKING | CONSOLIDATED INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS | DETERIORATION

Informal settlement consolidation or “build out” results in parallel conditions of improvement and deterioration. As part of São Paulo’s municipal ‘area of risk’ regeneration process, this Sensitive Densification studio designed strategies for areas most at risk for deterioration from general patterns of redevelopment and rental housing rise.  Guided by a community engagement process and data collected by the Chapa Civic Data lab, the strategies respond to existing challenges identified by residents—from safety and domestic violence to a lack of green space. Six areas connect to prior municipal plans to redevelop Heliópolis’streets, but specifically focus on inner-block areas, which are the most difficult to access and thus the hardest for designers to change. During the final review, students had the opportunity to present their projects to an international panel of experts, as well as residents from Heliópolis.
