URBAN CORRIDORS | MICRO REDEVELOPMENT | FIELD-BASED MAPPING | URBAN DESIGN

This project approaches contemporary urbanism through the lens of old urban corridors, with a focus on appropriating space between streets and high-rise residential buildings for public use. Drawing on a field study of the Frei Caneca corridor in São Paulo, our work identifies such meso-spaces as a new distributed public realm, coherent to the corridor but differentiated relative to each property’s ecological and material configuration.

This field-based methodology formed the basis for a seminar taught in 2009 at the Escola da Cidade. Organized around city walks, the seminar resulted in a series of public space interventions and their subsequent use by the community, which were documented through a range of multimedia.
